The best way to Overcome malnutrition

is to prevent it from occurring in the first place.

Second Mile Haiti’s Strong Start Maternity Center provides holistic, individualized care to women throughout pregnancy and birth so that they are prepared to raise healthy babies.

Many mothers in Haiti are in crisis.

Haiti has the highest rate of maternal, infant, and child mortality in the Western Hemisphere.

Most mothers and children who are living in poverty in Haiti do not have access to adequate healthcare. Even when they can afford treatment, it is often not comprehensive enough to achieve the intended health outcomes. As a result, 1 in 12 children in Haiti do not live to see their fifth birthday, and 1 in every 190 Haitian women die of maternal causes.

Comparison is helpful for perspective.

This is the number of women who die per every 100,000 Live Births in the following countries:

Canada: 7

United States: 26

Iceland: 1

Jamaica: 50

Dominican Republic: 60

Nicaragua: 68

Haiti: 520

We have solutions to address this.

We need to work together to make sure that Haitian mothers and children have access to the solutions that actually work.

The Strong Start Approach to Maternal healthCare

The Strong Start Maternity Center gives 170,000 individuals in Northern Haiti access to prenatal care, safe births, and family-based education. Our programs are effective because of our unique approach:

  • Focus on prevention: After working with undernourished children and their caregivers at the Second Mile Haiti Treatment Center since 2013, we saw the need to step back and intervene before children are even born so that they never become undernourished.

  • Research-based interventions: Our team of nurses, midwives, and skilled birth attendants are professionally trained and certified and we design our program interventions based on the latest research in maternal healthcare.

  • Holistic, 360° care: At Second Mile’s Strong Start Maternity Center, we make sure that women receive the care that they need so that they can give their children the start they deserve. Women who enroll in the Maternity Center’s program receive:

    • Comprehensive prenatal care

    • STI testing and treatment

    • Nutritional counseling & supplementation for undernourished mothers

    • 60 hours of health education

    • Psychologist and psychosocial support

    • 24/7 access to Skilled Birth Attendant and safe birth
