Maternity Center & Family Planning

The goal of Second Mile Haiti’s Maternity Center & Family Planning program is to reduce maternal and infant mortality through high-quality maternal, newborn, and reproductive health services. We serve women in Northern Haiti with two free-standing Maternity Centers offering family planning, prenatal visits for pregnant women, postpartum visits for mothers and newborns, prenatal vaccination and newborn immunizations, education, and breastfeeding support. Each Maternity Center operates a Birth Center that is open 24/7 and staffed by Skilled Birth Attendants including Midwives and Nurses.

2,431 women served in 10,193 visits

PRENATAL CARE

We’re proud to offer a comprehensive prenatal care program designed to diagnose and treat life-threatening complications while paving the way for a safe and empowering delivery. Our team is composed of licensed nurses, midwives, and nurse-midwives.

Family planning

Access to family planning services reduces maternal and infant mortality. At Second Mile, we offer access to 7 different family planning methods including IUD, Implants, Depo injection, and oral contraceptives.

In 2020 we distributed 21,164 condoms. All family planning supplies are donated by our partners and are free of cost to clients.

Birth and Postpartum Care

The Kim McPherson Birthing Unit is open 24/7 for birthing families. Our midwives practice continuous presence, meaning they never leave a woman’s side during the childbirth experience. This type of midwifery support leads to a better overall experience for the birthing person, the family, and the newborn.

We offer a comfortable place to give birth and rest for at least 24 hours after birth. In case of emergency, we provide emergency transport to the nearest hospital. As of March 2022, our birthing center in Jean Louis, Carrefour des Peres (just outside of Cap Haitien) has facilitated 710 births since February 2019. Our birthing center in Saint Raphaël opened in January 2022.

PRENATAL EDUCATION

Our Midwife-led prenatal education classes are offered weekly at both our Cap Haitien and Saint Raphaël Maternity Centers. Topics include: pregnancy, prenatal care, danger signs, anemia and hypertension, breastfeeding, newborn care, family planning, and the labor experience.
